The recent emergence of COVID-19 variant BA 2.86 has led some people to ask if they should reassess their behaviour in response or indeed to any other new variants of concern. As we brace ourselves for chillier days, more indoor gatherings and seasonal social events with friends and family, it is timeous to revive behaviours that can reduce the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory infections known to peak during the autumn and winter period.
In any institutional situation like a care-home or hospital, if you have an outbreak of a respiratory virus for example, this could become a significant event, particularly if you have any pre-disposed personnel/patients or are classed as a vulnerable person. The number of Acute Respiratory Incidents reported in England in the 2022/23 winter season amounted to 6,049 in closed settings. Of these, 5,006 (82.8%) were reported from care homes (see full report at https://www.gov.uk). This portrays the very real challenge to a care home that these winter infections represent in order to fulfil a duty of care to patients and also minimise hospitalisations and the pressure this creates every winter on the NHS.
This new 4 in 1 diagnostic tool is for professionals to add to their defences this winter in the form of a rapid (10 minute) lateral flow test which will differentiate Flu-A/Flu-B/ SARS-Cov-2/RSV all with just one swab. This test is CTDA approved and MHRA registered and suitable for use within your care home or at the point-of-care. Should you be considering this 4 in 1 lateral flow test product for your patients or staff this winter?
